Purchased from the Siwanoy Native Americans in 1661 and officially incorporated in 1788, Mamaroneck has a long history. This Westchester County town features a coastal frontage along the Long Island Sound and enjoys a 46-minute commute to Grand Central. In some sense, the 31,000 residents can claim to “having the best of both worlds” – scenic suburban living near a bustling city.
Mamaroneck includes homes from over a century ago. Not surprisingly, those homeowners also want the best of both worlds – traditional styles coupled with modern functionality. We recently installed an energy efficient heat pump system in a 5-bedroom, dutch-colonial home built in 1905 to illustrate this type of project.
OUT WITH THE OLD
This 2-story home used an oil boiler installed in 2000 feeding steam radiators throughout the house. Several window AC units cooled individual rooms. We first removed the boiler.
WORKING WITHIN THE CONSTRAINT OF THE ARCHITECTURE
The roof of this house was unusual. The roof was neither gable nor dormer but had elements of both. As a result, a couple rooms upstairs had slanted walls from the ceiling at the corners or around the windows.
On the ground level, the living room, dining room, and family room had a lovely, tiled pattern ceiling. Ductwork around the tile would have been unattractive and unworkable.
These specific characteristics on both levels limited available solutions.
IN WITH THE NEW…
We installed a ductless mini split system with multizone heat pumps to provide heating and cooling with wall-mounted units in ground floor rooms.
With access to the attic, we were able to use ceiling cassettes on the upper floor. This setup allowed independent control of each bedroom, office, and common area.
EQUIPMENT – FEATURES & BENEFITS
The Mitsubishi MXZ-SM Smart Multi Outdoor provides efficient, whole-home comfort, with multi-zone systems. First, we located a suitable outdoor location for the heat pump.
The outdoor unit was installed with a heat pump stand and included a line-hide kit and refrigeration line set. Rated at 2 Mits, the unit was upsized to accommodate future ductless units.
Coupled with the Mini Split Single Room Wall Mount Series, this pairing offers precise, discreet climate control. The MLZ Series One Way Ceiling Cassette is designed to fit between standard 16-inch joists. The cassette provides adjustable airflow while aesthetically being partially hidden in the ceiling.
These smart appliances feature multi-stage air filtration and auto vane control. Kumo Cloud Adapters were installed on each indoor unit for remote access via a mobile device.
This project qualified for a $10,000 Clean Heat Program rebate and a $2,000 Federal IRA Tax Credit. Tax credits are available to all, even those who do not itemize on their tax filings.
Mitsubishi provides a 12-year manufacturer warranty on parts and compressors. Thermodynamix warranties labor for 1 year and supports manufacturer warranty registration.
HEAT PUMPS EXPLAINED
Heat pumps transfer, rather than generate, heat. They do not burn fuel to generate heat. They are powered by electricity and use refrigerants in coils. They are more energy-efficient than furnaces or air conditioners.
Heat pumps can provide 3x to 4x as much heat energy produced compared to electricity drawn. In other words, its energy efficiency exceeds 300%. The most efficient space heater only approaches 0.9 to 1.0x energy efficiency.
The energy savings and reduced environmental impact has prompted government incentives for both manufacturers and purchasers. Newer units are more efficient and offer improved cold-weather performance.
- R-410A refrigerant has a lower boiling point and reduced ozone impact compared to R-22
- Improved compressors produce higher pressures using less power for refrigerants
- More efficient heat exchangers retain heat or cold.
Globally, heat pump sales grew 15% last year fueled by:
- Tax incentives and rebates for acquisition
- Improved performance
- Lower operating costs
- Homeowners’ desire to lower their carbon footprint
Thermodynamix installs air-source heat pumps that can be either ductless or ducted. We refer geothermal installation to a trusted provider and can provide guidance on that as needed.
ENERGY STAR independently rates appliances to identify energy efficiency. The better the rating, the higher the energy saving and the lower the environmental impact.
Heat pumps work best with clean filters, good insulation, flushed coils, cleared drainage system, and fully functional blower. Thermodynamix offers a maintenance program that proactively lengthens the life and increases the performance of your system.
