White Plains, NY, is a vibrant city nestled in Westchester County, just north of New York City. Known for its bustling downtown area filled with shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions, White Plains offers a blend of urban excitement and suburban charm.
The three-story Tudor style home with an unfinished basement was built in 1925 with pre-war construction with wire-lathe plaster walls and ceiling. The home had an old oil-fired hot water heater connected to cast iron radiators for heating and no central cooling system. The owners used window mounted air conditioning units for comfort in the summer. The pre-war construction and design made it very difficult to install ductwork for a ducted forced-air HVAC system. This type of home, typical of White Plains, NY, is a perfect candidate for a ductless mini-split system with wall mounted ac units.
The family wanted to replace their oil burning equipment that was inefficient and costly to run and maintain. They needed a new HVAC solution to provide heating & cooling for their home. They were also interested in any rebates or credits to help offset the cost of decommissioning the oil equipment and installing a new HVAC system.
The Problem:
This three-story Tudor style home in White Plains, NY had an oil-fired hot water heater connected to cast iron radiators to provide heating and no central cooling system. The owners used window mounted air conditioning units for comfort in the summer.
The Solution:
Thermodynamix, LLC installed a Mitsubishi Electric ductless mini-split heat pump system with Hyper Heat technology to give the home year round heating and cooling.
The Design
After measuring all rooms in the house, the comfort advisor completed a heat load calculation to determine the ideal BTU loads to properly heat and cool the home. A heat load calculation helps determine the correct size equipment to maintain comfort through all seasons and is required when submitting for rebates and incentives.
After a thorough discussion with both homeowners to understand their home comfort goals, we proposed a full ductless solution composed of two (2) Mitsubishi Electric Hyper-Heating condensers with a total of seven (7) FS series indoor wall mounted ac units. This system provides both heating & cooling.
The proposed Mitsubishi Electric's zoned comfort solution which allowed the family to control seven rooms in the house independently for heating & cooling.
We also included a Bradford White 65-gallon hybrid electric water heater for their domestic hot water needs.
Rebates & Incentives
The customer qualified for ConEd's $10,000 instant rebate for decommissioning their oil equipment and installing an air source heat pump system as well as the $2,000 Federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement (25C) Tax Credit.
The Installation
Before the installation could begin, the existing oil water heater had to be disconnected and removed from the basement. Next, we installed two (2) Mitsubishi Electric heat pump condensers with Hyper Heating technology. The condensers were installed on riser stands and concrete pads outside the home. This placement allows it to easily service all the interior units through the piping that was snaked through the walls like electrical wiring.
Inside the home, all the piping for the system was installed and hidden to provide a clean finish. And each of the seven indoor units were mounted.
A wall-mounted unit was installed in the unfinished basement. Wall-mounted units were also installed in the dining room, the family room, in three bedrooms on the second floor, and in a single bedroom on the third floor.
